Description:

My alternative rendition of this particular song from the land where winds of a new beginning blow, New Bark Town, specifically from the version of Pokémon Silver/Gold/Crystal in the Johto Region.

(Kalimba)

Key: D Major (preferable, as it is the original key of this song).

Standard tuning of the kalimba will also work.

Tines: 17

Melody: Yes

Harmony: Yes

Arranged for Pokémon Silver/Gold/Crystal

Kalimba Arrangement by: kylimbascapes

For the kalimba standard tuning, transpose the key to C.

To go back for the original key preference of the song, just transpose the key to D.

Note: I made some tweaks to a few tines because I noticed that this song includes some Bb notes (or Ab notes if we’re referring to the engraved keys on the tines of a standard-tuning kalimba). These notes are not part of the D Major scale. Unfortunately, tuning a kalimba from its standard C Major tuning to D Major isn’t enough by itself if we’re talking about playing this song to match the melody of the original. Plus, we have to consider that the standard kalimba has a limited number of tines, which are designed to play a Major scale—unless you’re using a chromatic kalimba. However, you can disregard the tweaks if you’d prefer to play the song in either the D Major scale or the C Major scale (standard tuning).

But if you want to, here are the options I’ve made depending on which major scale you’d like to use:

(D Major):

Before you tune the tines of your kalimba to the D Major scale, follow these steps:

Tune only the following engraved keys and their numbered notations to their D Major equivalents:

C1 = D

D2 = E

E3 = F#

F4 = G

G5 = A

A6 = B

B7 = C#

C1' = D

D2' = E

E3' = F#

F4' = G

G5' = A

C1'' = D

The following untweaked tines should now remain as they are: A6', B7', D2'', and E3''.

Now, tune the engraved A6' tine up by a half-step to the sound of A# or Bb (we can now consider it as A#6' or Bb6'). For the B7', D2'', and E3'' tines, there’s no need to tweak them—leave them as they are, with their original sounds according to their engraved keys and numbered notations.

Your kalimba should now look and sound like this (tines with their notations in parentheses are tuned to D Major, while those in double parentheses are tweaked):

C1 (D1)

D2 (E2)

E3 (F#3)

F4 (G4)

G5 (A5)

A6 (B6)

B7 (C#7)

C1' (D1')

D2' (E2')

E3' (F#3')

F4' (G#4')

G5' (A5')

A6' ((A#6' or Bb6'))

B7'

C1'' ((C#1'' or Db1''))

D2''

E3''

(C Major - Standard Tuning):

To play in standard C Major tuning, focus on tuning only these tines: A6', B7', C1'', D2'', and E3''.

First, disregard the A6', and lower-tune the remaining tines as follows:

- B7' → A7'

- C1'' → B1''

- D2'' → C2''

- E3'' → D3''

Now, the unlisted A6' tine remains untuned.

Lastly, lower-tune the A6' tine by a half-step to produce Ab or G# (we can now consider this as Ab6' or G#6').

Your kalimba should now look and sound like this (tines with their notations in parentheses are the tweaked ones):

C1

D2

E3

F4

G5

A6

B7

C1'

D2'

E3'

F4'

G5'

A6' (Ab6' or G#6')

B7' (A7')

C1'' (B1'')

D2'' (C2'')

E3'' (D3'')

For more details, you can check out the link to watch my rendition of the song with these tine tweaks, as I think embedded YouTube Shorts don’t work properly for playback. You can also use it to compare how it sounds when played with the D Major scale tweaks versus the alternative tablature (no tine tweaks).
